What is SETCON?

SETCON is a high-performance variable-speed gearbox designed to provide efficient and precise speed control for rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, and fans from 1 to 15 MW up to an output speed of 15 000 rpm.

How does SETCON work?

SETCON combines a mechanical gear unit with an electrical drive (low-voltage Servos and Frequency Converters). This enables continuous, stepless speed adjustment while maintaining high power-transmission efficiency.

What applications is SETCON suitable for?

SETCON is used in industrial sectors such as oil & gas, power generation, petrochemical plants, and water industries—anywhere reliable speed control for pumps or compressors above 1 MW is required.

How reliable is SETCON?

SETCON is designed for maximum reliability through proven engineering standards and robust components. The gearbox follows ISO, AGMA, and API design principles for durability, precision, and long service life. SETCON also uses low-voltage servo motors with compact VFDs supported by thousands of operational references worldwide.

What are the major benefits of SETCON?

  • High efficiency and reduced energy consumption
  • Only max. 20% Frequency Converter size
  • Low-voltage Frequency Converter Technology (e.g. 690 V)
  • Smooth and precise speed regulation
  • Low maintenance and long service life
  • Compact design

How efficient is SETCON?

SETCON significantly reduces power losses compared to throttling, VFD-only control, or fluid couplings—especially at partial load. It is one of the most efficient variable-speed systems available.

I am interested in a SETCON solution. Who should I contact?

Call us at +43 50 89 88 – 288 or send us an email to sales@set-solutions.net. We’ll be happy to assist.

Is SETCON easy to maintain?

Yes. SETCON requires minimal maintenance and offers long intervals between service cycles. Depending on the application, first service is typically after 5–6 years (approx. 2 days downtime) and overhaul after 10–12 years (approx. 8 days downtime). Service can be performed on-site thanks to standard components, horizontal split casing, and no special tools.

Can SETCON be integrated into existing systems?

Absolutely. SETCON can replace or upgrade variable-speed fluid couplings, VFD systems, or other control mechanisms with no or minimal modifications to the machinery or infrastructure.

What is the typical lifespan of a SETCON gearbox?

SETCON is engineered for long operational life— exceeding 25+ years when properly maintained.

What support and services are available for SETCON?

SET GmbH provides full support including engineering consultation, installation assistance, commissioning, staff training, remote monitoring, and long-term maintenance services globally.

Why is SETCON a preferable solution compared to Medium Voltage VFD?

  • Higher efficiency: lower losses, especially at partial load
  • Reduced footprint and power demand: the low-voltage Frequency Converters require only 20% of total output power
  • Smaller Main Motor Power: due to the additional Servo power available the Main Motor can be designed up to 20% lower in power
  • Lower lifecycle cost: standard low-voltage components and fewer auxiliaries
  • High reliability: robust gearbox design (ISO/AGMA/API) + industrial Standard low-voltage Servos
  • No harmonics/EMC issues: fewer grid-side challenges than MV-VFDs
  • Simpler installation: no MV transformers or HV infrastructure
  • Easier maintenance: faster service with readily available spare parts

Is SETCON the best solution for replacing outdated variable-speed fluid couplings?

Definetely. SETCON is an ideal upgrade for outdated (geared) variable-speed fluid couplings. It offers higher efficiency, lower energy consumption, smoother operation, straightforward installation, minimal maintenance, and long service life. SETCON has a matching footprint to the majority of (geared) variable-speed fluid couplings. See following youtube video for further information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRQRZx4RECw

Is it possible to use synchronous motors with SETCON?

Yes. SETCON supports medium-voltage synchronous motors. The frequency-converter-driven servos start the drivetrain and precisely synchronize the main motor to the grid. Synchronous motors can also stabilize weak grids by improving power factor and system stability.
