New SETCON Automation Test Bench

SET hereby announces the completion of its SETCON automation test bench. This newly equipped test bench will allow SET to pre-test the entire functionality and software of the SETCON system, including communication to and from the DCS. It will also enable our customers to realistically accept the entire software by modeling the transmission. In addition, this test facility is also used for internal and external training purposes at SET and is intended to further improve the SETCON system in its functionality and availability.

Finally, the use of the automation test bench guarantees the functionality of the SETCON system and the smooth integration process at the customer’s site. Subsequent changes and adaptations at the customer’s site are thus to be avoided. Ultimately, this pre-testing approach saves time, costs and effort for all parties involved.

SETCON SE6 variable-speed gearbox will be implemented by RWE Generation SE at HKM Thermal Power Plant Duisburg-Huckingen in Germany

SET (Sustainable Energy Technologies) GmbH is delighted to announce the receipt of an order from the international energy company RWE Generation SE. The project will be implemented at the HKM thermal power plant Duisburg-Huckingen, Germany. It involves the replacement of an existing Voith R17 KGS hydro-dynamic geared coupling with the highly efficient SETCON® – electro-mechanical variable speed gearbox.

With a rated power of 5 750 kW and a rated output speed of 6 282 rpm, SETCON® is perfectly suited to meet on-site conditions, due to the matching gearbox footprint, which reduces implementation time and effort substantially. Furthermore, it will deliver significant energy savings compared to the status quo, with an average energy saving of more than 1 000 kW continuously.

In addition to the immediate benefits of increased efficiency, this project has the potential to lead to a follow-up order from RWE after the successful operation of this first SETCON® unit. This represents a major step forward in the efforts of SET GmbH together with RWE to reduce energy consumption and to promote sustainable practices in the power generation industry.

Energy efficiency is critical as it minimizes the amount of energy required, leading to lower energy costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and improved energy security. Most recent investigations also confirm that energy efficiency is one of the most powerful methods for reducing energy-related emissions. Therefore, governments and organizations globally are enhancing energy efficiency through various policies and initiatives to set maximum energy efficiency levels for products and buildings. These initiatives have further promoted the utilization of energy-efficient technologies and practices, reducing energy consumption, emissions, and costs. SET GmbH is proud to be contributing to the shift towards energy efficiency and is confident that SETCON® technology will play an important role in meeting the growing demand for sustainable and environmentally relevant solutions.

SETCON – function model coming soon

SET is currently working on a new function model for SETCON – highly efficient variable speed drive. This close-to-reality function model enables a pre-test of SETCON´s software and control functions. Furthermore, it helps to integrate the interfaces with the customer´s DCS (distributed control system) in advance which can save significant time and costs during implementation on-site. All controlling equipment such as Main Motor, Servos and Frequency Converters are integrated and checked beforehand. From the perspective of execution, this target-orienting approach can bring a great advantage.

Additionally, this new function model will contribute to the further development of SETCON´s control philosophy, making SETCON even more efficient and practical for the energy and oil&gas industry.

Second SET Partnership in 2022 with Termall Poland

After the partnership contract with the American company Kraft Werks Engineering (KWE) early this year, SET Sustainable Energy Technologies GmbH (SET) is delighted to announce the second partnership with the Polish company Termall. During this period of severe energy and climate crisis, SET is pleased to find this great new partner from EU, who shares the same business philosophy as SET and dedicates themselves into new technologies for a sustainable green future.

Termall is a family business with a 30-year tradition in the city of Bełchatów, Poland and has a great standing in the Polish power plant and general industry market. Termall is dedicated to service, maintenance, supervision, commissioning and operation in various industry fields, with an impressive track record. Like SET, the work of Termall is based on the highest industrial standards and strict principles. With references all over Poland and neighboring countries in different areas, Termall is an ideal partner to support SET in the aspiration to increase efficiency in the power market.

The most important number of the climate crisis is CO2 emissions and actions need to be done urgently to reduce it. According to the statistic from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in July, the atmospheric CO2 in parts per million has reached 415.6 ppm, which is 65.6ppm above the safe level for climate stabilization. As the UN secretary-general António Guterres during the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in July:” “Half of humanity is in the danger zone, from floods, droughts, extreme storms and wildfires. No nation is immune,” therefore, it is critical to find a solution to reduce the high CO2 emission now.

This new cooperation will guarantee both companies an improved access to the Polish energy market and supports their intention to make a sustainable contribution to energy efficiency and CO2 reduction.

Due to the high demand for efficient solutions in the energy sector and SETCON’s unique selling proposition in terms of efficiency and installation space, all parties look forward to the cooperation with confidence.

New SET Partnership with Kraft Werks Engineering

SET Sustainable Energy Technologies GmbH (SET) has signed an agreement with the company Kraft Werks Engineering (KWE) based in Medina Ohio U.S. recently. This agreement will allow Kraft Werks Engineering to support the sales and service activities in North America as well as introduce SETCON® to the exclusively selected customers. This official announcement also means that SET Sustainable Energy Technologies GmbH has officially expanded their business to a third territory, after EMEA and Asia.

Kraft Werks Engineering was formed through the acquisition of the GÝROL® Fluid Drive and TLT-ASH Handling product lines whose roots can date back to 1930. As a specialist in the large precision machining services, Kraft Werks Engineering has many years of experience in the energy and oil & gas industry, moreover, the company consists of experienced and skilled team who have a deep know-how about the local market.

According to the information from International Energy Agency, the global energy-related CO2 emissions grew to 36.3 gigatonnes in 2021, which is the highest record ever at the annual level. As the fuel mix of US power generation is undergoing a considerable transition and coal power has declined in the last decade as the shale gas boom made natural gas-fired generators more cost-competitive, however, the CO2 emissions of the US in 2021 still increased by 4.5% from 2020, which pushed emissions to 4.6 gigatonnes.

Together with Kraft Werks Engineering, SET Sustainable Energy Technologies GmbH will introduce their high efficient drive – SETCON®, the electro-mechanical variable-speed gearbox designed to control speed of large pumps and compressors – to the North American market and help the local business to optimize their energy efficiency and to reduce the emissions.
